52fcef573f (PUP-638) Add a pick_default() function that always returns a value.
This version of pick() does not error out, instead always returning at least
the last argument, even if that too has no "real" value.

264dc9bbde (PUP-1195) Fix is_numeric/is_integer when checking non-string parameters
I expect a function called "is_numeric" or "is_integer" to check if a
variable is an integer or a number even if the variable passed by isn't
a string nor a number at all. Otherwise we should call them
is_string_a_number and is_string_an_integer and we have then to remove
the check for .is_a?(Number) and .is_a?(FixNum)

now checking also if it is a hex or octal number

improved/corrected checking for integer

* checking against Integer instead of Fixnum so that
  also Bignum is matching
* now .is_a? Integer is done first so this is quiet fast

Now many types of numerics are recognized.

1. Float/Integer values (signed or unsigned, with exponent or without)
2. octal and hex check
3. except hex numbers and the "0." in a float lower than 1 can be prefixed
   with a '0'.

whitespaces shouldn't be allowed as prefix/suffix

string representation of numbers should not contain any type of
whitespace.. the user is responsible to clean a string before checking
it..

fix documentation and added more checks

tried to be 99.9% backward compatible

* for now the decission is post poned if hex and octal numbers
  should be allowed or not (is_numeric)
* native Bignum is now also a valid integer class

fix problem with old 1.8 ruby and Hash.to_s/Array.to_s

In ruby < 1.9 array and hashes would be recognized as numeric
if they have a special format:

1.8:

  [1,2,3,4].to_s = "1234"
  {1=>2}.to_s    = "12"

1.9:

  [1,2,3,4].to_s = "[1, 2, 3, 4]"
  {1=>2}.to_s    = "{1=>2}"

80a8b7bd1f (#20681) fix behaviour of delete_undef_values
The issue #20681 describe the error of delete() function
removing the elements from the origin array/hash/string.

This issue affected other delete functions. Because
ruby delete and delete_if functions make destructive
changes to the origin array/hash.

The delete_undef_values removed elements from the
origin array/hash and this is not the desired behaviour.

To solve this, we should dup or clone the array/hash
before using the delete or delete_if ruby functions.

We should also check if args[0] is not nil before using
dup, since dup on nil raises exception.

This fix the problem and add unit tests, so we could
enforce this behaviour and prevent regressions.

c14cbf31e2 bug # 20681 delete() function should not remove elements from original list
The setup: list with 3 elements, delete one:
$test_list = [‘a’, ‘b’, ‘c’]
$test_deleted = delete($test_list, ‘a’)

Print out the elements in ‘test_deleted’:
notify { ‘group_output2’:  withpath => true, name     => “$cfeng::test_deleted”, }
Notice: /Stage[main]/Syslog/Notify[group_output2]/message: bc

Good! Run-on output shows that ‘a’ was deleted

Print out the elements in ‘test_list’:
notify { ‘group_output1’: withpath => true, name     => “$cfeng::test_list”, }
Notice: /Stage[main]/Syslog/Notify[group_output1]/message: bc

WHAT!? 'a' was deleted from ‘test_list’ as well! Expected abc as output!

This behaviour is confirmed for string, hash and array.
This is fixed on this commit, I had added two spec tests to cover that cases.

bug #20681 spec test for delete() function.

I had forgot in the last commit the spec test for hash in the
delete function.

bug # 20681 delete() function change aproach.

Instead of rejecting elements from the original list, we use
collection = arguments[0].dup .
then latter we could continue to use delete and gsub! on collection
without impact on original argument.

this is a better solution than the previous one, and works on ruby
1.8.7, 1.9.3 and 2.0.0.

The previous solution does not work on ruby 1.8.7.

delete function remove typo whitespace.

30e994fb6e enhanced the error message of pick function.
When pick function fail return a better error message like
the other stdlib functions, indicating that the error
is on function pick.

This would help people that see the error to identity it is
related to a incorrect use of stdlib function pick, instead of having
to grep all puppet libraries and manifests source for the old message.

I had also changed the spec test.

pick function change spec as suggested GH-179

Fix the spec test to use expect {}.to instead of lambda {}.should
as explained by Adrienthebo.

"Using expect { }.to is preferred over lambda { }.should.
 In addition it's best practice to do a string match against the
error message to ensure that we're catching the right error,
instead of any error of the right type."

Also fixed a typo on the error message, it was missing one space.

948be0bb99 (maint) Improve the tests and readability of file_line
Without this patch the implementation of the file_line provider is a bit
convoluted with respect to the newly introduced "after" parameter.

This patch addresses the problem by separating out the concerns of each
case into their own methods of handling the behavior with the match
parameter, handling the behavior with the after parameter, or simply
appending the line.

221277e852 Update file_line resource to support 'after'.
When adding new lines to a file the 'after' option can be useful
when you need to insert file lines into the middle of a file.

This is particularly helpful when using file_line with sectioned
config files.

NOTE: the after option only works when adding new lines. If you are
updating an existing (matched) line it will simply modify it in place.
This assumes it was in the right place to begin with.

0206d367c0 changed the validate_slength function to accept a min length
An optional third parameter can be given a min length. The function
then only passes successfully, if all strings are in the range
min_length <= string <= max_length

update and fix function and unit tests

the check for the minlength has to be written differently
because 0 values should be possible. We now check
a) if the input is convertible, and throw a ParseError and
b) if the input .is_a?(Numeric) and ask for a positive number
it's not as clean as for maxlength, but keeps a similar behaviour

refined the error checking for the min length

try to convert to Integer(args[2]) and fail,
if it's not possible

3b887c880c (#20582) Restore facter_dot_d to stdlib for PE users
Without this patch Puppet Enterprise users who install the most recent
version of stdlib lose the ability to resolve certain facts critical to
the operation of Puppet Enterprise. These facts are defined externally
in the file
`/etc/puppetlabs/facter/facts.d/puppet_enterprise_installer.txt`.
As an example, Puppet Enterprise catalogs fail to compile if the
`fact_stomp_server`, and `fact_stomp_port` facts are not defined.

`facter_dot_d` was removed from stdlib version 4 because Facter version
1.7 now supports external facts defined in
`/etc/puppetlabs/facter/facts.d/puppet_enterprise_installer.txt`.
Puppet Enterprise does not yet include Facter 1.7, however. The most
recent PE release, 2.8.1, includes Facter 1.6.17. With this version of
Facter, users who replace the version of stdlib that ships with PE with
the most recent version from the Forge will lose the ability to resolve
facts from
`/etc/puppetlabs/facter/facts.d/puppet_enterprise_installer.txt`.

This patch addresses the problem by detecting if Facter version < 1.7 is
loaded. If so, then the facter_dot_d.rb facts will be defined using the
stdlib custom fact. If Facter >= 1.7 is being used then stdlib will not
define external facts.

77991d3a77 Revert "Revert "Revert "Merge branch 'hkenney-ticket/master/2157_remove_facts_dot_d'"""
This reverts commit 8fc00ea5b6.

We're restoring facts_dot_d support to stdlib because users are pulling
in the latest version of stdlib while on Puppet Enterprise which breaks
the operation of PE itself when the fact_stomp_server and
fact_stomp_port facts are not defined. They are not defined in PE
because PE runs with Facter 1.6.17 and Puppet 2.7.21

8d217f0012 (19864) num2bool match fix
This is a bit more heavy-handed than I might like, but it does appear to
do the right things:

* accepts numeric input appropriately, truncating floats
* matches string input against a regex, then coerces number-looking
  strings to int
* makes a best effort to coerce anything else to a string, then subjects
  it to the same treatment
* raises an error in the event of incorrect number of arguments or
  non-number-looking strings

I've also included some additional unit tests.

4a5218a8af Reworked number-handling logic
No more coercing to String and regex matching. Instead, we now coerce
to Integer at the beginning or raise an error if we cannot coerce to
Integer.

A consequence of this change is that the function will now accept
blatantly non-numeric strings as input, and return false. This seems a
bit goofy to me, but it's how String#to_i works. If we really don't
like this, then I'm open to suggestions.

a45d4f1307 Revert "Merge pull request #130 from jhoblitt/has_element"
This reverts commit f7a18189ec, reversing
changes made to 36a7b29630.

I'm reverting this change because of concerns raised by Peter Meier that
it duplicates the "in" operator in the DSL. The "in" operator is new
information that I did not posses when I made the decision to merge.
Because of this new information I'm un-merging and continuing the
discussion in the comments of
https://projects.puppetlabs.com/issues/19272

95cf3fed68 (#19272) Add has_element() function
It is exceptionally difficult to determine if an array contains an element matching a specific value without an iteration or loop construct.

This function is the Puppet equivalent of Array.includes?(foo) in Ruby. The implementation is a verbatim copy of has_key() with the minor modifications needed to support arrays instead of hashes.

3cef5d9e33 (#19201) Add concat function to join two arrays
Without this patch applied there is no easy way to append one array to
another. This is a problem because it is often desirable to join two
arrays without flattening the contents into a single, one dimensional
array.

This patch addresses the problem by adding a `concat()` function which
takes two arguments. The arguments will be concatenated together and a
new array returned to the caller.

This patch addresses the problem by explicitly returning an empty string if the
string itself is empty. This avoids trying to convert an empty string to a
symbol which is the root cause of the problem.

20e0e07090 Add getparam function to get defined resource parameters
As far as i know there's no other puppet-dsl-like way to get parameter of
defined resource, so that's why i implemented getparam function, which takes
resource reference and parameter name and returns parameter value.

    Here's another example why this function is really useful:

    define config($path, $config_param1, $config_param2) { }

    define example_resource($config) {
        $path = getparam($config, "path")

        notice("Path is $path")
    }

    define example_resource2($example_resource, $config = getparam($example_resource, "config")) {
        $config_param1 = getparam($config, "config_param1")

        notice("Config parameter is $config_param1")
    }

    define example_resource3($example_resource, $config = getparam($example_resource, "config")) {
        $config_param2 = getparam($config, "config_param2")

        notice("Config parameter is $config_param2")
    }

    class test_getparam {

        config { "config_instance":
            path => "/some/config/path",
            config_param1 => "someconfigtext1",
            config_param2 => "someconfigtext2",
        }

        example_resource { "example_resource_instance":
            config => Config["config_instance"]
        }

        example_resource2 { "example_resource_instance":
            example_resource => Example_resource["example_resource_instance"]
        }

        example_resource3 { "example_resource_instance":
            example_resource => Example_resource2["example_resource_instance"]
        }
    }

8a8c09ed34 Add an ensure_packages function.
Its often the case that modules need to install a handful of packages.
In some cases its worth breaking these dependencies out into their own
modules (e.g., Java). In others it makes more sense to keep them in the
module. This can be problematic when multiple modules depend on common
packages (git, python ruby, etc). ensure_resource was a good first step
towards solving this problem. ensure_resource does not handle arrays and
for 3 or more packages stamping out ensure_resource declarations is
tedious.

ensure_packages is a convenience function that takes an array of packages
and wraps calls to ensure_resource. Currently users cannot specify
package versions. But the function could be extended to use a hash if
that functionality would be useful.

Previous to this commit, the delete function only acted on

ba6dd13990 Add the pick() function
This function is similar to a coalesce function in SQL in that it will
return
the first value in a list of values that is not undefined or an empty
string
(two things in Puppet that will return a boolean false value).
Typically,
this function is used to check for a value in the Puppet
Dashboard/Enterprise
Console, and failover to a default value like the following:

  $real_jenkins_version = pick($::jenkins_version, '1.449')

The value of $real_jenkins_version will first look for a top-scope
variable
called 'jenkins_version' (note that parameters set in the Puppet
Dashboard/
Enterprise Console are brought into Puppet as top-scope variables), and,
failing that, will use a default value of 1.449.

f8194176dc (#13974) Add predicate functions for interface facts
If one wishes to test if a host has a particular IP address (such as a floating
virtual address) or has an interface on a particular network (such as a
secondary management network), the facts that provide this information are
difficult to use within Puppet.

This patch addresses these needs by implementing functions
‘has_ip_address(value)’ and ‘has_ip_network(value)’. These functions look
through all interfaces for ipaddress_<interface> and network_<interface>
(respectively) having the requested <value>.

These functions are implemented on top of a lower-level predicate
function, ‘has_interface_with(kind, value)’, which iterates through the
interfaces in the ‘interfaces’ fact and checks the facts <kind>_<interface>
looking for <value>.

Additionally, the existence of a particular named interface can be checked for
by calling with only a single argument: has_interface_with(interface).

A Boolean is returned in all cases.

2885d314b6 Revert "Revert "Revert "Merge branch 'hkenney-ticket/master/2157_remove_facts_dot_d'"""
This reverts commit 8fc00ea5b6.

I really wish we could get this right.

Without this patch there is no branch that contains backwards-comaptible
new functionality relative to the current 3.0.1. There are only
branches that contain backwards-incompatible functionality relative to
3.0.1.

This is a problem because I need to do a release of stdlib that contains
backwards compatible facts but does not contain any breaking changes.

This patch fixes the problem by establishing the 3.1.x branch. This
branch will then revert the backwards incompatible changes from the
3.1.x branch and revert the revets in the 4.x and master branches.

I'll review our merge process, but it seems wrong that there is no place
to separate out incompatible from compatible changes when working beyond
the most recent patch release.

a0cb8cdee4 Add function ensure_resource and defined_with_params
This commit adds 2 new functions with unit tests.

defined_with_params works similarily to puppet's defined
function, except it allows you to also specify a hash of
params. defined_with_params will return true if a resource
also exists that matches the specified type/title (just like
with defined) as well as all of the specified params.

ensure_resource is a function that basically combines defined_with_params
with create_resources to conditionally create resources only if the
specified resource (title, type, params) does not already exist.

These functions are created to serve as an alternative to using
defined as follows:

    if ! defined(Package['some_package']) {
      package { 'some_package': ensure => present,
    }

The issue with this usage is that there is no guarentee about
what parameters were set in the previous definition of the package
that made its way into the catalog.

ensure_resource could be used instead, as:

    ensure_resource('package', 'some_package', { 'ensure' => 'present' })

This will creat the package resources only if another resource does
not exist with the specified parameters.

Without this patch the pe_major_version, pe_minor_version, and
pe_patch_version facts directly depend on the pe_version fact in a
manner that calls split directly on the return value.

This is a problem because Fact values are not always guaranteed to
return strings, or objects that respond to split. This patch is a
defensive measure to ensure we're always calling the split method on a
string object.

If the Fact returns nil, this will be converted to an empty string
responding to split.

a certain prefix (e.g., "foo=.*"), and *replace*
the existing line with the line you specify in your
"line" parameter. Without this capability, if you
already had a line "foo=bar" in your file and your

with *both* lines in the final file. In many cases

ea43e86516 (#13091) Fix LoadError exception with puppet apply
Puppet apply does not add the stdlib lib directory to the $LOAD_PATH.
This is a problem because the puppet_vardir fact requires the
puppet_settings library to be available for the `with_puppet` utility
method.

Without this patch, puppet apply will result in the following error:

    $ puppet apply --modulepath=/vagrant/modules -e 'notice $puppet_vardir'
    warning: Could not load fact file stdlib/lib/facter/puppet_vardir.rb: no such file to load -- facter/util/puppet_settings
    notice: Scope(Class[main]):
    notice: Finished catalog run in 0.01 seconds

With this patch applied, puppet apply works as expected:

    $ puppet apply --modulepath=/vagrant/modules.pe -e 'notice $puppet_vardir'
    notice: Scope(Class[main]): /Users/jeff/.puppet/var
    notice: Finished catalog run in 0.01 seconds

This patch defensively tries to load facter/util/puppet_settings. If it cannot
load it, it falls back to trying to explicitly locate and load the library.

Once puppet is fixed such that a modules lib directory is truly in the
$LOAD_PATH, the fall back implementation will no longer be exercised since the
LoadError should not be raised.

31944c9863 (#12357) Fix broken compatibility with Puppet 2.6
Without this patch, the previous change set to the

incompatible changes. stdlib 2.x is compatible with Puppet 2.6. These

This patch fixes the problem by back porting the implementation of the
`Puppet::Util.absolute_path?` from 2.7.x to the function block itself.

The function block tests to see if `Puppet::Util.absolute_path?` will
respond and if not, falls back to the inline back ported implementation.

even when running with Puppet 2.7.

This is an absolutely horrific error message. I'm to blame for it.
Users stumble over this quite often and they shouldn't have to go read

This patch makes an effort to fix the problem by adding a third,

message thrown back in the exception which will be displayed to the end

On windows, the Puppet confdir is quite variable. On 2003 systems we
default to the All Users application data directory. On 2008 systems we
default to the ProgramData directory. The actual configuration
directory varies depending on the Puppet or Puppet Enterprise branding.

In order to simplify all of this variable behavior, this patch fixes the
problem by automatically looking for facts in
`%COMMON_APPDATA%/PuppetLabs/facter/facts.d`

This patch paves the way for the MSI installer to use an IniFile element
to write custom facts during installation.

a452f6a9af (#12357) Add puppet_vardir custom fact
Without this patch the PE modules don't have a way to identify a
filesystem path where it's OK to place variable data related to managing
the target node. This is a problem when a module like pe_compliance
needs to write a wrapper script to the node's filesystem.

This patch addresses the problem by exposing the node's Puppet[:vardir]
setting as a Facter fact.

This fact value will be set to `nil` if Puppet is not loaded into
memory. If Puppet is loaded, e.g. using `facter --puppet` or using
`puppet agent` or `puppet apply` then the fact will automatically set
the value to Puppet[:vardir]

The value of this setting is subject to Puppet's run_mode.

This patch implements a new utility method in the standard library
module named `Facter::Util::PuppetSettings.with_puppet`.  The method
accepts a block and will only invoke the block if the Puppet library is
loaded into the Ruby process. If Puppet is not loaded, the method
always returns nil. This makes it easy to define Facter facts that only
give values if Puppet is loaded in memory.

afd22ddc99 (#12357) Fix root_home fact on Windows
Without this patch the root_home fact fails on windows. This patch
fixes the problem by only calling methods on the object returned by the
`getent passwd root` command if the object evaluates to true.

Because there is no root account on Windows the code block simply
returns `nil` which makes the Facter fact undefined on Windows
platforms.

The root cause of the failure is that we always expected the command to
succeed and return something useful, and it may not on all supported
platforms.

8713943d37 (#12776) Added validate_slength function and rspec test
This function is used to validate a string is less than a maximum length. The
string, or array of strings, is passed as the first argument to the function.
The maximum length of the string is passed as the second argument.

It is useful to validate, for example, that Puppet is not sending a username
to a downstream system that the system cannot cope with, but that might not
cause an error message - for example, MySQL will not accept a username of
more than 16 characters. This enables a Puppet administrator to validate
the data that it may have been passed from upstream through, for example,
Hiera.

Without this patch an infinite loop will be entered if the json and
rubygems libraries are not available.

This patch fixes the problem by retrying the `require 'json'` only if
rubygems was successfully loaded for the first time. Subsequent
attempts to load rubygems will cause the LoadError exception from a
missing json library to be re-raised.

95c88a1305 (#9080) Add facts from /etc/puppetlabs/facts.d
This fact is a direct copy of R.I.'s work at
https://github.com/ripienaar/facter-facts

This is necessary plumbing to allow the installer to write a simple text
file based on the role the node is receiving. For example:

    $ cat /etc/puppetlabs/facts.d/puppet_enterprise_mcollective.txt
    fact_stomp_port=61613
    fact_stomp_server=puppetmaster
    fact_is_puppetagent=true
    fact_is_puppetmaster=true

The mcollectivepe module relies on these facts being set and we need a
persistent place to write them during the interview process and later
read them when puppet agent runs to configure MCollective on the agent
systems.

Since stdlib is a public module, both /etc/facts.d and
/etc/puppetlabs/facts.d are scanned for static facts.
